Transcoding with Amarok

Amarok's Configure Media Device supports transcoding but it's not too obvious how this option is enabled (well at least not to me). So I'll just going to write a short guide here.

In order for Amarok to do transcoding you have to install a script that is compatible with Device Manager transcoding. One such script is transKode.

In order to install transKode add the following to your /etc/portage/package.keywords:

media-sound/transkode ~x86

Add amarok to USE flags for transKode /etc/portage/package.use:

media-sound/transkode amarok

Install transKode:

emerge transkode

Fire up Amarok and go to Tools -> Scripts Manager. Under Transcoding mark transKode and click Run and congure transKode (defaults should be ok).

Now you should be able to choose Transcoding in the Configure Media Device dialog.

Have fun when listening to your music on the move and do remember to support the artists.

An important note: if you have amarok running when you emerge transkode, you'll need to restart amarok for transkode to show up in Script Manager.
